Remove Background from Image — Free AI Tool
AI-powered background removal. Works on people, products, animals, and more.
Background removal used to mean opening Photoshop, masking by hand, or paying $0.20 per image to a hosted service. Dropvert runs the same kind of segmentation model the paid services use — straight in your browser, free, and without uploading the photo anywhere.
How it works
3-step walkthrough
How it works
3-step walkthrough
- 1
Drop a photo
JPEG, PNG, WebP — anything your browser can decode. People, products, animals, food, vehicles, and most clearly-separated subjects work well.
- 2
Wait while the model loads (once)
On first run, Dropvert downloads a ~50 MB AI segmentation model into your browser cache. After that, every subsequent removal is instant on the same device.
- 3
Pick a background, then download
Keep the result transparent (PNG), or replace the background with a solid white, black, or custom color. Compare the before/after with the slider before downloading.

Frequently asked questions

- How accurate is the background removal?
- Dropvert uses the briaai/RMBG-1.4 model, the same one many paid services license. It handles soft edges (hair, fur, fabric) noticeably better than older "magic wand" approaches. Difficult cases — heavy motion blur, glass, transparent objects, very busy backgrounds — may need a manual touch-up.
- Why does the first run take a minute?
- The first time you use the tool, the AI model itself (~50 MB) needs to download into your browser. You'll see a "Loading AI model" progress bar. After that initial download, the model is cached locally and subsequent removals start instantly.
- Is it really free?
- Yes. The model runs in your browser, so there's no per-image cost for us to pass on. It's free for everyone, with no signup required.
- Does my photo get uploaded?
- No. The image, the model, and the inference all run on your device. The tool works offline once the model is cached. We never receive the file.
- What output format do I get?
- PNG with a real alpha channel (transparent background) by default. You can also fill the background with white, black, or a custom color, in which case the output is still PNG but with a solid background.
- Why does the result still have a faint outline?
- On photos shot against a similar-color background, segmentation can leave a 1–2 pixel halo of the old color around hair or fur. Sharper edges generally mean a cleaner result; if you need a perfect cutout for product photography, shoot against a contrasting background.
- Can I remove the background from many photos at once?
- Yes. Drop multiple files (up to 10 per batch) and Dropvert processes them sequentially with the same settings, then bundles the results into a single zip download.
